Laila Soueif: Jailed activist's mother in hospital after 242-day hunger strike
Briefly

Laila Soueif, the mother of jailed activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah, has been hospitalised as she enters her 242nd day of a hunger strike demanding her son's release. Sanaa Seif, Abd el-Fattah's sister, has urged UK leader Keir Starmer to take immediate action. The Foreign Office has expressed concern for Laila's health and is maintaining communication with her family while pressing for her son's release at high levels of the Egyptian government.
We are concerned to hear of Laila's hospitalisation. We remain in regular contact with Laila and her family and have checked on her welfare.
It's a miracle that last night passed. It's a miracle that we still have her, Sanaa Seif said.
