A Labour minister has been embroiled in a Bangladeshi corruption probe after the country’s government accused her of helping her aunt embezzle billions of pounds. City Minister Tulip Siddiq is accused of being involved in a scheme to siphon off £5.2 billion intended for eight large-scale projects, including a nuclear power plant. Siddiq has not commented on the allegations, but Labour figures have called them spurious, asserting they are politically motivated.
Mr. Syed Faruk, general-secretary of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League party, stated the accusations against Siddiq are 100 percent politically motivated. He emphasized that they are targeting her due to her familial ties to Sheikh Hasina, the recently ousted prime minister of Bangladesh, specifically due to her being the niece of Hasina.
