On Monday, Israeli forces killed two Palestinian journalists, Hossam Shabat and Mohammad Mansour, in Gaza, raising the death toll of journalists to at least 208 since the conflict escalated on October 7, 2023. Mansour was killed with his family when Israeli forces targeted his home, while Shabat was fatally struck in a targeted airstrike while driving. 23-year-old Shabat had been known for reporting on the situation in northern Gaza and had left a poignant message expressing his dedication to documenting the truth and the Palestinian cause, even in the face of potential death.
If you're reading this, it means I have been killed - most likely targeted - by the Israeli occupation forces... For the past 18 months, I have dedicated every moment of my life to my people.
By God, I fulfilled my duty as a journalist. I risked everything to report the truth, and now, I am finally at rest - something I haven't known in the past 18 months.
