The British government has announced the cessation of all funding for Tell Mama, an organization that has recorded an alarming increase in anti-Muslim hate incidents. Established in 2012 and funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, Tell Mama has been essential in reporting and supporting victims of Islamophobia. In 2023-2024, they documented nearly 11,000 incidents, highlighting a significant rise in hate crimes amidst escalating tensions linked to the Israel-Gaza conflict. Police express concern over how these funding cuts could jeopardize monitoring of hate crimes and exacerbate community tensions.
Fiyaz Mughal, founder of Tell Mama, stated that funding cuts arrive at a time when anti-Muslim sentiment and far-right activities are alarmingly rising across Europe.
The Ministry of Housing has decided to end funding for Tell Mama, despite the service receiving a record number of reports of anti-Muslim hate incidents.
