India-Pakistan tensions trigger fears of escalatory spiral DW 05/08/2025
Briefly

Tensions soared between India and Pakistan after India conducted aerial strikes on targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. These strikes were in retaliation for a recent deadly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, India, which killed 26 individuals and was claimed by an organization linked to a UN-designated terrorist group. Despite the pressure for a swift response, India's government planned the operation carefully to avoid escalation. The strikes targeted what India described as 'terrorist camps,' including significant headquarters of prominent militant groups, aiming to disrupt their operations and capabilities.
The Indian government said the targets were "terrorist camps" that served as recruitment centers, launchpads and indoctrination centers. It also said the sites housed weapons and training facilities.
Ajai Sahni, executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi, stated that "two of these camps are the headquarters of the two most significant groups, Muridke of the LeT and Bahawalpur of the Jaish-e-Mohammed."
