Illegal images allegedly made by Musk's Grok, watchdog says
"The UK watchdog responsible for classifying and flagging online child sexual abuse material to law enforcement agencies said it found criminal images on the dark web allegedly generated by Grok, the artificial intelligence tool tied to Elon Musk's X. The dark web images depict sexualized and topless images of girls between the ages of 11 and 13 and meet the bar for action by law enforcement, the Internet Watch Foundation said."
"The IWF is designated by the UK government to identify and classify child sexual abuse material, and its determinations trigger the mandatory removal of content and hand law enforcement agencies the categorization they need to pursue criminals. Tools like Grok now risk bringing sexual AI imagery of children into the mainstream, Ngaire Alexander, head of the reporting hotline at the Internet Watch Foundation, said in a statement. That is unacceptable."
"XAI, which operates Grok and X, did not meaningfully respond to a request for comment. The watchdog's findings escalate concerns that Grok is being used to create illegal material. Regulators and lawmakers have condemned the AI tool over the last week for generating sexualized images of women and children on social media platform X. Now child-safety experts are raising the alarm that users are using Grok's standalone app and site to generate more extreme material privately and share it."
The Internet Watch Foundation found criminal images on the dark web allegedly generated by Grok that depict sexualized and topless girls aged 11 to 13 and meet the threshold for law enforcement action. The IWF categorized the material as clearly illegal and said it differs from anything found on Grok's chatbot on X. The IWF's determinations trigger mandatory content removal and provide law enforcement with necessary categorizations. XAI did not meaningfully respond to requests for comment. Child-safety experts warn users are privately generating and sharing increasingly extreme child sexual imagery via Grok and other AI tools, including processing content through additional models to create graphic video.
