The IAEA has officially condemned Iran for violating its nuclear non-proliferation obligations for the first time in almost 20 years, following a resolution from its 35-nation board. The motion passed with support from Western nations, while Russia, China, and Burkina Faso opposed it. Iran's failures to cooperate fully regarding undeclared nuclear activities have prompted this unprecedented action. In response, Iran declared plans to enhance its enrichment capabilities, raising concerns about escalating tensions and the possibility of reinstated UN sanctions against Tehran in the future.
The IAEA board "Finds that Iran's many failures to uphold its obligations since 2019 to provide the Agency with full and timely cooperation regarding undeclared nuclear material and activities at multiple undeclared locations in Iran..."
Iran responded defiantly to the resolution by announcing it would open a new enrichment site and upgrade centrifuges at the Fordow nuclear facility.
