Sam was seriously injured while protecting passengers during a mass stabbing on an LNER service from Doncaster to London that began after leaving Peterborough. The train made an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon after passengers activated emergency alarms and the driver requested assistance. A GoFundMe set up in Sam's name raised more than 40,000 and neared a new target of 50,000. Sam briefly regained consciousness and his wife was able to speak with him; recovery remains ongoing.
