Headteachers are pursuing legal action against Ofsted due to concerns that the new inspection regime could worsen the already existing pressures on school leaders' mental health. The National Association of Head Teachers raised issues about inadequate consultation related to the new grading system of schools, especially following the tragic suicide of headteacher Ruth Perry, which highlighted the catastrophic impact of the current regime. Despite Ofsted claiming to support mental health, school leaders feel their concerns have been largely ignored, prompting the legal challenge as a last resort to protect their wellbeing.
Somehow the focus on school leader mental health and wellbeing has got lost along the way during Ofsted's consultation process.
The tragic death of Ruth Perry highlighted that the inspection regime was placing school leaders under intolerable pressure.
School leaders are deeply concerned that the new report cards could result in an even worse system than before, with potentially disastrous impact on workload, wellbeing and retention.
An Ofsted spokesperson stated that they are already hearing positive feedback through our inspection tests.
