GCHQ intern jailed for stealing top-secret files
Briefly

Hasaan Arshad, a 25-year-old former GCHQ intern, was jailed for seven-and-a-half years for unauthorized copying of top-secret files during his placement. Arshad completed internships at GCHQ in 2019 and again from 2021-2022, where he accessed a top-secret network. Just days before his placement ended, he copied sensitive data onto a mobile phone and external hard drives at his home. Although he claimed to have acted out of curiosity to enhance his work, he pleaded guilty to an offense that jeopardized national security.
"I removed the data simply out of curiosity to further develop some of the changes I was unable to complete during the course of my placement."
"I'm sorry for my actions and I understand the stupidity of what I have done. I understand the potential damage and risk when obtaining the data."
