Four-fold rise in young people identifying as gay, lesbian or bisexual
Briefly

Recent figures indicate that a growing number of young adults in the UK are identifying as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB), with over 10% of 16-24 year-olds reporting their sexual orientation as LGB. This statistic shows a significant increase from previous years, reflecting changing societal attitudes towards sexuality. The overall population identifying as LGB has also doubled since 2018, indicating not only a rise in numbers, but a decrease in those identifying as heterosexual. The data collected by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) highlights these developments and suggests a trend towards greater acceptance and openness regarding sexual orientation.
The rise in young adults identifying as LGB may also be due to a 'large increase' in the proportion of young people generally who said they were bisexual.
The proportion of 16 to 24-year-olds who are LGB has almost quadrupled in a decade and now stands at over one in 10.
According to the ONS, more people being open to identifying their sexual orientation is contributing to a changing societal attitude towards LGB identities.
The estimates were published by the ONS using data from the Annual Population Survey, which collects information on sexual identity from the household population.
