The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) confirmed that 37 prisoners in jail for breaching restraining orders were mistakenly freed due to a system error involving outdated legislation.
The MoJ emphasized that public safety is a top priority, stating their commitment to ensuring the correct release of offenders and monitoring those mistakenly freed.
As of now, five of those incorrectly released are still at large, with the MoJ and police actively working to return them to custody.
The guidance issued will help prevent future mistakes, as the MoJ acknowledges the importance of releasing only those who meet the criteria for early release.
