English Heritage chief steps down after a turbulent 18 months in post
Briefly

Nick Merriman has resigned as CEO of English Heritage due to personal family health issues. His tenure saw significant restructuring, including a 7% staff reduction and decreased opening hours at many sites. The charity, which became self-financing in 2023, no longer receives regular funding from the UK government to maintain historic sites. Its latest financial report showed a £141.4m income against £155.5m in expenditures, highlighting the fiscal challenges faced. Despite criticism, it received praise for offering free site entry to refugees last September.
Merriman oversaw a restructure of the charity, reducing English Heritage's 2,535-strong workforce by 7% or around 189 posts.
English Heritage stressed that it no longer receives regular funding from the UK Department of Culture, Media and Sport to care for the National Heritage Collection.
