"The campaigners said on Thursday morning as the judgement was published: Court of Appeal has ruled that Tower Hamlets decision to remove Liveable Streets in Bethnal Green is UNLAWFUL. Councils can't just tear out schemes without Mayor of London's approval. This is a MAJOR precedent for London boroughs. The campaigners had raised over 100,000 from almost 2,000 donations to fund the appeal."
"The judges found in favour of the campaigners on one of the three points of law but said that, as a result, the proposed axing of the LTNs should be quashed". One of three low traffic schemes in question, located at Old Bethnal Green Road in Tower Hamlets"
Campaigners Save Our Safer Streets won a Court of Appeal ruling that Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman acted unlawfully in deciding to remove three low-traffic neighbourhoods in Bethnal Green, Shoreditch and Columbia Road. The crowdfunded appeal reached the Court of Appeal after an earlier High Court hearing. Judges found for campaigners on one legal point and quashed the proposed removals. Campaigners raised over 100,000 from almost 2,000 donations. Residents expressed relief and called on the mayor to accept the schemes, reconsider the planned 2.5m public spend and pursue measures to reduce car dependency and create healthier neighbourhoods.
