East London homes left without water for nearly a week
"We were notified of a loss of water at Wellington Estate, and our contractor attended promptly on 6th and 7th January to inspect the boosted water system, confirming it was operating correctly and that cold-water tanks were full. Following further reports from individual properties, our contractor returned on 8th January and arranged emergency water deliveries to the affected blocks, alongside access to Council leisure centres for residents."
"First you wonder is it just you and then you talk to the neighbours and you realise it's not. I went to the swimming pool to have a shower. We organised ourselves at the community centre so people could get water there. I went with my kettle and my buckets."
"There's all these temporary plastic pipes they've attached them they've dug big holes and blocked access roads off."
Many homes on Wellington Estate in Tower Hamlets had no running water from 5 to 11 January. Residents carried buckets and kettles to a nearby community centre to collect water for washing, cooking and cleaning. One resident used a leisure centre shower and described community organisation to share water supplies. Bottled water arrived on Sunday before temporary plastic pipes restored flow. Excavation works and temporary piping have blocked access roads. Tower Hamlets contractors inspected the system, arranged emergency deliveries, implemented a temporary repair and said they are working with contractors on a permanent solution.
