Christopher Jackson, 27, from Southampton, drove a van into a metal gate on the Strand in central London on 18 March 2025, causing it to detach and strike a bench where Aalia Mahomed, a second-year physics and philosophy student at King's College London, was sitting. Aalia died at the scene. Jackson pleaded guilty in February to causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Two other individuals, Irem Yoldas and Yamin Belmessous, sustained serious injuries in the incident. At sentencing, Aalia's mother Samira Shafi delivered a victim impact statement, describing her daughter as an exceptional person whose loss created an irreplaceable void in their family.
