Disability claimants waiting more than a year for claims to be processed'
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"Disability benefit claimants are often waiting for more than a year for their claims to be processed as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) routinely misses its targets, the Commons spending watchdog has warned. In a wide-ranging report, the cross-party Public Accounts Committee (PAC) found numerous failings at the DWP, including missed targets, unclear planning, and a lack of transparency."
The Independent sends journalists to investigate issues from reproductive rights to climate change and Big Tech while keeping reporting free of paywalls and funded by donations. Personal Independence Payment (PIP) claimants often face waits of more than a year as the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) routinely misses processing targets. The cross-party Public Accounts Committee (PAC) identified missed targets, unclear planning, and lack of transparency within the DWP. Just over half of new PIP claims met the 75 working-day target in 2024/25. Many claimants are pushed into debt and poverty, and the DWP lacks an adequate short-term improvement plan.
