We have provided up to 40 million funding for additional security at mosques, Muslim schools and community centres."
"A serious security incident had occurred during prayers. Volunteers spotted a suspicious bag containing an axe before they escorted a man to a separate room. The mosque urged all attendees to remain vigilant and advised people to travel in groups, as well as not to leave children unattended."
A 55-year-old white British man named Darren Connor was charged with possession of an offensive weapon and class B drugs following an incident at Manchester Central Mosque during Ramadan prayers on Tuesday evening. Connor entered the mosque armed with an axe but no injuries resulted from the incident. Mosque volunteers discovered a suspicious bag containing the axe and escorted the man to a separate room, preventing potential harm. Greater Manchester Police stated the incident is not terror-related. Connor was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court on Friday. A second arrested individual faces no further action. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed concern for Muslim communities and highlighted government funding for mosque security.
