Recent research reveals that a significant portion of British drivers, up to one-third, are concerned that soaring car insurance premiums may force them off the road. Between May 2021 and June 2024, car insurance prices surged by 82%, leaving many motorists struggling financially. Although there have been slight reductions in average premiums, from £769 in late 2022 to £561 in 2023, costs are still higher than three years ago. Additionally, drivers are changing habits, with many reducing mileage or altering the purpose of their journeys due to these financial pressures.
Motorists have been hammered by the accelerating cost of car insurance over recent years, leaving many people with no choice but to give up on driving completely.
While the average cost of car insurance in the UK has started to decrease slightly - a trend which will hopefully continue throughout 2025 - premiums remain significantly higher than they were just a few short years ago.
