In a Westminster Hall debate, Labour MP Kirith Entwistle stressed the need for revenge porn to be made a statutory civil offence, allowing victims a pathway for redress without the trauma of a criminal trial. She highlighted the alarming increase in reports to the Revenge Porn Helpline, noting that last year saw nearly 19,000 cases, illustrating the urgency of addressing image-based abuse and its categorization as a form of digital violence that affects many victims deeply.
Entwistle emphasized the complex nature of image-based abuse, calling it an escalating crisis in an increasingly digital world. She pointed out that survivors often refer to their experiences as 'digital rape,' a term that effectively reflects the severe psychological impact of such violations. Since 2015, the Revenge Porn Helpline has received reports of 338,000 intimate images, underscoring the widespread occurrence of these abuses and the pressing need for legislative changes to protect victims.
