"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation"
"Rankings of the best place in the country to live were once dominated by leafy towns and cities in the south but those days appear to be over. A new list of the most desirable places to live in England and Wales has awarded the top spot to Marple in Greater Manchester, with three out of the top ten places in the city region, and five in the north of England."
The Independent solicits donations to fund on-the-ground reporting across reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech, enabling journalists to interview both sides of stories. The outlet emphasizes trust across the political spectrum and maintains free access by avoiding paywalls, relying on supporters who can afford to donate. Garrington Property Services compiled a 2026 ranking of English and Welsh places with more than 5,000 residents using five criteria: natural beauty, wellbeing, heritage, schools and jobs, plus value for money. Marple in Greater Manchester topped the list, followed by Rawdon, St Albans, Bramhall and Long Ashton. Marple was praised for its close connections to Manchester, strong community spirit and proximity to natural landscapes.
