UK archaeologist Piers Litherland has announced the potential discovery of a second tomb belonging to Pharaoh Thutmose II, despite an existing mummy in Cairo identified as him. The initial tomb was discovered in 2022 near the Valley of the Kings and marks the first royal burial site found since King Tutankhamun's. Litherland believes there is more to uncover beneath layers of earth and questions the identification of the mummy in Cairo, calling into mind historical mislabeling of mummies in the past.
Litherland suggests that the identification of the mummy in Cairo as Thutmose II may be flawed, questioning the basis of its known label as 'Aa-en-re'.
The archaeological findings near the Valley of the Kings suggest that there may be further undiscovered royal burials, which could change our understanding of Thutmose II’s final resting place.
