"Things were already looking pretty grim for the NHS on Christmas Eve, as emergency departments simply don't have enough beds in our hospitals," Dr Ian Higginson warned.
"Normally just before Christmas we'd expect a bit of a lull. So I'm afraid things are looking pretty difficult out there for our patients and for our staff," said Dr Higginson.
"The Royal College of Emergency Medicine stated that half of the A&E departments are full to bursting amid a 'quad-demic' of respiratory infections," highlighting the crisis in NHS services.
"Hospitals in England are managing record flu levels this winter, facing significant pressures from multiple conditions affecting their ability to care for patients effectively."
