'A very, very sad and difficult time' - Teenager dies after getting into difficulty while swimming in River Barrow, Carlow

A tragic incident unfolded in Co. Carlow when a 17-year-old boy, swimming with friends, encountered difficulties and submerged in the River Barrow. Emergency services were alerted, launching a swift search operation. Sadly, the boy's body was discovered around 11.30pm by Garda divers within a short distance from his last known position. The deceased, who was a beloved secondary school student and active in local sports, was remembered fondly by the community. A post-mortem will be conducted at Waterford University Hospital as the Gardaí treat this case as a tragic incident.

Mayor of Carlow Cllr Fintan Phelan expressed condolences, stating the incident is 'very, very sad and difficult for them all'.
