Onlysans from Daria Cohen rejects timelessness in favour of fierce modernity (and memes)
Briefly

Daria has transitioned from creating timeless typefaces for foundries to embracing a more experimental design ethos with her new typeface, Onlysans. This variable post-geometric sans serif reflects her desire to capture the essence of the present moment. Daria challenges traditional design norms by prioritizing responsiveness and playfulness over longevity. Inspired by her admiration for Italian vernacular signage, she completed Onlysans in about a month, marking a significant departure from her previous work, which typically took longer to develop. This shift signifies a broader trends in contemporary type design today.
Over the past decade Daria has mainly worked with foundries that take the long-view approach, looking to produce timeless typefaces that outlast the designer.
I wanted to trap a moment and translate it into a typeface.
I made the whole thing in about a month, which is practically reckless in type design terms, but that's the beauty of it, it's not meant to be timeless - it just exists in the now.
Within its letterforms Daria explores the tension between pragmatism, precision, and play - all at the purposeful expense of timelessness.
