Forecasts indicate widespread but uneven fall foliage across the United States, with about 25 states expected to see vivid colors and 23 states likely to experience duller displays. New England and parts of the West Coast, including Colorado aspens from September through mid-October, are poised for strong color thanks to adequate spring and summer moisture. The Appalachian and Smoky Mountain areas may show more muted tones after heavy rainfall and flooding. Late summer heat could shorten peak color periods in some regions. Shifting climate patterns and extremes are increasing variability in both timing and vibrancy of the season.
