The July 1964 issue of National Geographic ignited a national awareness and outcry to preserve California's old-growth redwoods, showcasing their ecological importance and stunning size.
"I would characterize that article and discovery of the tallest tree in the [Tall Trees Grove] as the final impetus for creating a national park," says Leonel Arguello.
For many readers, it was the first time they'd seen California's redwoods, grasping their monumental scale, which shifted perceptions toward preservation.
Though the decision to create Redwood National Park had been in discussion for years, the National Geographic article brought immediate attention to the cause.
