Revealed: What really happens when a plane gets struck by lightning
"Imagine this: you're halfway through your plane journey, anxiously anticipating your arrival to whichever exciting holiday destination you've chosen. The weather has taken a turn for the worse - and, all of a sudden, lightning strikes. You'd be forgiven for feeling terrified. But what really happens if a plane is hit by lightning? Globetrotting flight attendant Mateusz Kowalewicz has revealed the highs and lows of life in the skies - from lightning strikes and brutal sleep deprivation to ticking off the world's greatest wonders."
"Mateusz recalled one flight he was on being struck by lightning. 'It felt like someone flashed a camera straight in my eyes. A moment later, we heard from the cockpit that we had to turn back to Warsaw. 'The aircraft was fine, but logically it's better to return and take another plane than risk finding out in Rome that the aircraft must be grounded.'"
Mateusz Kowalewicz became a flight attendant after early travel experiences and hitchhiking across Europe. A flight he was on was struck by lightning, producing a camera-flash sensation and prompting a return to Warsaw as a precaution despite no visible damage. He grew up in Białystok, Poland, and now lives in Warsaw while travelling globally for work. His airline operates three aircraft types and monthly rosters vary. He has visited all the New Seven Wonders of the World, using layovers and staff tickets. He struggles with sleep on long-haul eastern layovers and is a heavy sleeper vulnerable to unexpected wake-ups.
