The journey from Mooloolaba harbor stirs memories of the past. Four decades ago, a beautiful cruising ketch named Pearl Bay set sail for Moreton Bay. Today, the harbor has transformed, filled with new constructions and activity. A widow reflects on her late husband John, a passionate sailor and adventurer, whose ashes are scattered alongside the sea. His spirit is commemorated with a heartfelt epitaph, symbolizing his undying love for the ocean. The farewell reflects both a deep personal loss and the vibrant life he led as a sailor.
John was born a restless soul, saltwater in his veins and distant oceans in his dreams. He ran away to sea as a teenager in the 1950s.
Today it's surrounded by mansions and multi-storey holiday apartments, and filled to capacity with boats; an endless forest of masts and rigging.
It's resting in a basket of yellow rose petals. The QF6 Mooloolaba Coast Guard setting out to give a sailor's farewell to Marie Jansen's husband John.
The only epitaph that seemed to fit: Cosmos Mariner, Destination Unknown, fitting for a life spent at sea and in pursuit of adventure.
