I stayed in a $40 capsule hotel as return to office mandates drive workers back to the city
Briefly

"We've formed this sweet spot between the two. We're not a budget hostel. We're not coming in at a 15 rate, giving you a bunk bed in a steel room,"
"When we decided to get into capsules, we really took inspiration from Asia, and the capsule concept was really born out of Japan as a response to very similar pressures we're facing in London."
Capsule hotels provide a low-cost alternative for office workers facing pressure to return to city offices, with nightly rates around $30–$40. Zedwell Capsule Hotel in Piccadilly Circus, owned by Criterion Capital, opened in September and offers nearly 1,000 private capsules measuring roughly 1m by 1m by 2m. The hotel sits inside the historic London Pavilion with an unassuming entrance near the station. Central London hotel rates averaged £265 per night in Q3 2025, while the European hotel average was €125 in summer, creating demand for an option between hostels and standard budget hotels. The capsule concept takes inspiration from Japan, where the first capsule hotel opened in Osaka in 1979.
