High heels and risky selfies: Etna eruptions cause despair among mountain rescuers
Briefly

Mount Etna's recent eruptions have become a major tourist attraction, drawing thousands who seek thrilling selfies near the lava. However, many visitors lacked proper gear, leading to dangerous situations, including hypothermia and blocked rescue operations due to haphazard parking. Authorities have expressed concern over the reckless behavior of visitors, with some seen inappropriately dressed or mistreating safety measures. New restrictions are being enforced to protect both tourists and the natural environment, as the volcano increasingly resembles a hazardous playground rather than an area for responsible observation.
We saw all sorts of scenes. People approaching the lava flow in high heels and miniskirts, people in shorts, someone started roasting sausages, others were taking shirtless photos near the lava. A couple brought a six-month-old baby.
Authorities threatened to report imprudent visitors to the police and introduced restrictions to stay away from the magma. They have turned a volcano into a playground.
