Gothenburg provides an accessible Nordic city break with the airport under 30 minutes from the city centre and a central hotel hub opposite the main station. The city projects a relaxed Scandinavian vibe, less earnest than Stockholm, with a strong seafood culture based on fresh North Sea catches. Feskekörka, a historic fish market since 1874, combines retail and dining after a modern refit. Trendy shopping and pre-loved fashion proliferate in Haga, one of the oldest neighbourhoods, which also connects to a lively party district. The surrounding archipelagoes offer serene natural escapes for longer stays.
One of the most popular destinations in the Nordics is Sweden's second city Gothenburg. It's the ideal spot for a weekend getaway if you are pressed for time, or for a longer holiday if you want to fully explore the surrounding areas as well as the vibrant city centre. Here is the Culture Trip guide to serene Gothenburg, the spectacular archipelagoes and everything in between.
Arriving late in Gothenburg is no problem as the airport is less than 30 minutes from the city centre. I landed from London on an evening flight but having pre-booked my bus ticket to a hotel in town I was on my way within moments of stepping off the plane. The hotel itself, Scandic Europa, sits opposite the central station here. As the name would suggest, this is the main terminus for trains, trams and buses.
