Heavy rain and possible lightning forced closure of the gate into and out of Black Rock City Tuesday evening, halting entry and exit. Rain and thunderstorms also shut down Nevada State Route 447 near Nixon and disrupted travel toward Gerlach. Officials advised drivers on SR447 to wait in safe locations, noting Gerlach lacks parking capacity and travel into the site could exceed eight hours. Travelers were warned to plan and be prepared to wait. The closure followed a recent dust storm with gusts over 50 mph that caused four minor injuries and briefly closed the event gate as gusts damaged tents and installations.
The gate into and out of Black Rock City was closed Tuesday evening due to rain and possible lightning, as bad luck continues to put a damper on the festivities at Burning Man. The rain and thunderstorms also closed Nevada State Route 447 in Nixon, Nev. "If you are already on SR447 heading toward Gerlach, drive carefully and ensure you wait out stormy conditions in a sensible location that does not impact residents or traffic," according to an update on the Black Rock City 2025 website.
"Gerlach does not have parking capacity for waiting vehicles. Travel time into the event site could take more than 8 hours. Plan your travel accordingly and be prepared to wait." The closure comes just a few days after the playa was hit by a dust storm that saw wind gusts of over 50 mph. Four participants sustained minor injuries and the gate to the desert event was closed for nearly two hours as gusts pummeled tents and art installations.
