Toronto's mayor, Olivia Chow, is hopeful for the opening of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT amid ongoing delays. Commenting on a potential September launch revealed by the Toronto Star, Chow joked about the wait. While Metrolinx did not confirm the opening date, Chow noted that TTC workers are prepared for operation. The Crosstown line, planned to open in 2020, has suffered significant budget increases to at least $12.8 billion due to technical issues and delays. Calls for a public inquiry into the project's management have emerged as scrutiny intensifies.
"Hopefully I'm still alive seeing it open," Olivia Chow said with a laugh at an unrelated news conference Friday morning. "I guess it's good news."
"We can start right away," she said. "We've been ready for years."
Documents obtained by CBC Toronto in 2022 showed the project costs had jumped to at least $12.8 billion.
"Maybe they could work faster, maybe they could do it in June that would be even better, but hey," she said.
