Toronto renter left briefly in the dark as landlord didn't pay for power | CBC News
Briefly

A Toronto renter, Alex Atkinson, faced a power disconnection due to a misunderstanding with his landlord regarding utility payment responsibility. Following the sale of the property, Atkinson learned the new landlord failed to transfer utility accounts. Despite the rental agreement stipulating that the landlord should cover the payments, Atkinson received notices of unpaid bills. He expressed that he should not be responsible for ensuring utility accounts remain active. Although the property management contacted him to address the issue, the disconnect incident highlighted potential lapses in tenant-landlord communication.
The situation arose when Atkinson's original landlord sold the property, leading to confusion about utility payments, ultimately resulting in the disconnection of his power.
Atkinson expressed his frustration, stating, 'I want to not be in a scenario where I have to call these vendors to check if my landlord paid the bills.'
