Graham Palmateer, the owner of Gram's Pizza in Toronto, has replaced all U.S. ingredients in his pizzeria as a protest against President Trump, who is threatening high tariffs on Canadian goods. Palmateer feels strongly about this decision, believing it sends a powerful message until there's a change in U.S. governance. While many Canadians are boycotting American products, food economist Mike von Massow notes that such a shift is challenging for many restaurants due to reliance on U.S. produce, especially in winter. Palmateer reports that this change has not affected his prices or business viability thus far.
"I'll be avoiding American products for the foreseeable future, until our friends from the South make some more responsible electoral decisions," Palmateer told As It Happens host Nil Kksal.
"It's an interesting thing to do, and it's sending a message," the University of Guelph professor told CBC.
"When we as consumers decide to buy only Canadian, one of the options we have is to change what we're eating. That's more difficult to do if you're a restaurant and you have a menu," von Massow said.
"It's easier for small establishments like Gram's Pizza to drop U.S. ingredients than it would be for a restaurant with a larger or more diverse menu."
