Toronto Fire chief announces charges in Thorncliffe Park condo fire | CBC News
"Toronto Fire Services was not notified of the fire for over 30 minutes. The investigation determined that construction activities taking place at 11 Thorncliffe Park Dr., used ignition sources near combustible materials, causing the fire to ignite. A total of 408 units had to be evacuated until residents were allowed to return to their units in stages."
"PFC Construction Inc. was charged with failing to protect combustible materials from ignition sources during hot surface applications, failing to conduct a fire watch and ensure a fire warning is sounded, and failing to provide portable fire extinguishers when conducting hot surface applications."
"The fire broke out on Nov. 27 and wasn't extinguished until Dec. 15. Toronto fire officials previously said the blaze burned combustible particle board placed in an expansion joint between the two buildings. Crews had to go through the walls of some units to access the source and ensure the fire was out, which caused extra damage."
Following an investigation by Toronto Fire Services and police, charges were laid against a condominium corporation, property management company, and construction company related to an 18-day fire at Thorncliffe Park that forced 408 units to evacuate. The fire began on November 27 and burned until December 15, originating from combustible particle board in an expansion joint between two buildings. Construction activities using ignition sources near combustible materials caused the fire to ignite. Toronto Fire Services was not notified for over 30 minutes. Violations included failing to protect combustible materials, conduct fire watches, provide fire extinguishers, and implement fire safety plans. All three companies are scheduled to appear in court.
