Italy's Defence Minister Guido Crosetto has urged a technical evaluation of Starlink's potential $1.6 billion, five-year contract, emphasizing that personal political opinions about Elon Musk should not influence decision-making. The contract remains stalled due to mixed reactions, particularly from opposition parties critical of Musk’s ties to the U.S. administration. This political backdrop intensified after Musk's remarks about Starlink's importance to Ukraine's defense, further complicating the approval process despite backing from some government factions expressing confidence in Starlink's technological superiority over competitors like Eutelsat.
I believe we need to distinguish political aspects from technical ones, as we cannot base our reasoning solely on sympathy, antipathy, or temporary political ties to people like the world's major tycoons.
In theory, the only evaluation we should give to the Starlink system ... should be purely technical.
