Sinister new scam sweeps US as baby-faced criminals steal thousands
Briefly

A series of scams in Atlanta are highlighting a dangerous trend among local teenagers posing as 'water boys' at traffic stops. Victims report unauthorized bank withdrawals after interacting with these scammers, who present QR codes or request access to phones under the guise of selling bottled water. Affected individuals have experienced significant financial losses, including one woman who had $1,100 withdrawn from her Cash App account without proper verification. Experts warn that such phishing tactics are becoming increasingly common and advise caution when dealing with QR codes in unfamiliar contexts.
'One of the boys came up to my window,' Richardson said in a TikTok video detailing the events. She did not have cash with her, so she offered to send the money through Cash App.
'Cash App usually has three methods of verification before any money is sent,' she told FOX 5 Atlanta. 'None of those were used. They were all bypassed.'
