Rivian is gearing up to launch its R2 crossover, which aims to compete with the popular Tesla Model Y. During a recent earnings call, CEO R.J. Scaringe confirmed that the R2 program is progressing, with prototype assembly underway using mostly finalized production tooling. The company is currently building 'validation builds' to ensure both the vehicle's engineering and the robustness of supplier processes. Rivian plans to start R2 production in early 2026, initially expanding its Normal, Illinois factory to produce up to 155,000 units annually.
"When we look at the R2 program, this is well underway... producing R2 validation builds at pilot scale."
"Those vehicles are critical for not just validating the vehicle itself from an engineering and design point of view, but also validating our suppliers..."
