Pride Toronto is facing a significant funding shortfall of $900,000 as major corporate sponsors, including Home Depot and Google, withdraw their support just before Pride Month. Executive director Kojo Modeste linked these withdrawals to the current political climate and its impact on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. While the City of Toronto has committed $350,000 in funding, there is a lack of similar support from provincial and federal governments. Modeste noted that some businesses have stepped in to help, and individual donations are also contributing positively.
We believe that there is a direct connection between the policies that we're seeing coming out of the White House and the organizations that are pulling out.
They are pulling away from diversity, equity and inclusion.
Toronto being the host of the world's second largest pride festival allows businesses in the gay village to make over 50 per cent of their annual revenue.
There is still room for organizations and individuals to give.
