Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned Stellantis for reportedly negotiating with Zhejiang Leapmotor Technology to produce electric vehicles at the Brampton assembly plant. Ford stated that such a deal would harm Ontario autoworkers and contradict commitments made by the federal government. Stellantis, which acquired a 21% stake in Leapmotor in 2023, has paused production at the Brampton plant for retooling. The plant, previously employing about 3,000 workers, is undergoing changes to prepare for the Jeep Compass, which is now produced in the U.S.
