Nearly half of 911 calls to Peel Region are non-urgent. A new campaign aims to change that | CBC News
Briefly

Peel Region's new campaign is designed to inform residents when to appropriately call 911, as nearly half of these calls are unnecessary. Many residents mistakenly contact emergency services for non-urgent issues, like coffee temperature complaints. This confusion partly stems from a lack of awareness, with over 30% of people unsure what number to call for municipal services. Campaign advertising will be in 90 languages to improve understanding. There are discussions of potential fines for misuse, especially as 40% of calls to police were deemed inappropriate.
Peel's Commissioner of Health Services Nancy Polsinelli emphasized that 911 is reserved for urgent, life-threatening situations, while many calls are unnecessary or trivial.
Deputy Chief Anthony Odoardi highlighted that approximately 40 percent of calls to police are classified as non-legitimate, with some calls being quite absurd.
