Man Drives Cybertruck Into Lake to Test Elon Musk's "Boat" Claims, and It Went About as Well as You'd Guess

Elon Musk previously claimed the Cybertruck could float and traverse water like a boat, with only minor upgrades such as cabin door seal improvements. After the vehicle reached market, it faced recalls, incidents, and weak sales. Reports indicated that even getting wet in a car wash could disable the truck. Tesla later added “Wade Mode,” raising ride height to help ford creeks and streams. A Texas driver activated Wade Mode and drove into Grapevine Lake when the vehicle became disabled. Police reported the Cybertruck was stranded in the water, passengers abandoned the vehicle, and the driver was arrested.

"“It will even float for a while,” he wrote at the time. It wasn't a one-off claim. Musk later boasted that the vehicle would be able to “traverse at least 100m [330 feet] of water as a boat.” “Mostly just need to upgrade cabin door seals,” he claimed, writing at another point that the “Cybertruck will be waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes and even seas that aren't too choppy.”"
