Body-worn cameras coming to GO Transit, UP Express this spring, Metrolinx says | CBC News
"Body-Worn Cameras are small devices worn on an officer's uniform to record audio and video during interactions. Dash Cameras are installed on vehicles to record activity in and around the vehicle. These tools support safety, provide an accurate record of events, and help promote fairness."
"The body-worn cameras will be turned on only during certain interactions, including safety incidents, investigations, or when a rider fails to provide valid proof of payment in a fare paid zone."
"Officers are trained to let customers know when recording begins. A flashing red light and audible beep means the camera is active."
"The move comes after a GO train struck and killed a 13-year-old boy on the Lakeshore West line on March 18, and after a 46-year-old man was shot dead on a GO bus on Jan. 4."
Metrolinx will introduce body-worn cameras for customer protection officers, revenue protection officers, and station safety ambassadors this spring. These cameras will record audio and video during specific interactions, such as safety incidents or fare violations. Officers will inform customers when recording begins. Dash cameras will also be installed in vehicles to capture similar interactions. This initiative follows recent safety incidents involving fatalities on the transit system, aiming to improve safety and provide accurate records of events.
