Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews out for season with Grade 3 MCL tear, quad contusion
"A dirty play. The league will obviously look at and see what the suspension will be or whatever. We should've had four guys in there doing something about it, but it didn't happen. But I thought they responded in the third. It was a good response there, but we all would've liked everybody to get in there right away."
"I didn't have a good view of it, because the puck was going the other way, but it's on me for not responding earlier to Gudas being there. It's a dirty hit. I didn't understand how bad he got him in the moment, but I take full responsibility for not being the first one in there or being in there."
"Matthews is the team's best player and is the foundation of the franchise. He recorded 27 goals and 53 points in 60 games this season. Matthews also captained the United States men's hockey team to its first Olympic gold medal since 1980."
Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews sustained a Grade 3 MCL tear and quad contusion during a game against the Anaheim Ducks after a knee-on-knee collision with defenseman Radko Gudas. Gudas intentionally stuck his knee out to clip Matthews in the offensive zone and received a match penalty. The Maple Leafs will re-evaluate Matthews in two weeks. Gudas faces a phone hearing from the NHL Department of Player Safety, which limits potential suspension to five games or fewer. As a repeat offender with four previous suspensions, Gudas' supplementary discipline is pending. Matthews, the team's best player and franchise foundation, recorded 27 goals and 53 points in 60 games this season. The Maple Leafs did not immediately respond to the hit, which head coach Craig Berube acknowledged as a missed opportunity.
