In December, seven trades were completed in the NHL, leading to speculation about a similar rush before the upcoming Four Nations break. This would allow teams to acquire players for more game exposure prior to the true trade deadline. Brad Treliving of the Leafs acknowledged the need to strengthen their center position. With Max Domi underperforming and injuries impacting the roster, the Leafs face significant challenges in depth at center, indicating a clear area of focus for potential trades to enhance their playoff readiness.
This seems to be a position du jour. We probably, along with 15 or 18 other teams, are looking at center depth.
Domi has largely struggled in the role. He is pacing for the lowest goals-per-game output of his career and to tie his lowest points-per-game mark.
The Leafs recently subbed in Pontus Holmberg at 2C over Domi with John Tavares injured, highlighting a significant gap in center options.
None of those three—Domi, Holmberg, or Minten—are truly good playoff options who make you feel comfortable and confident at this stage.
