Darryl Sittler on message to today's Maple Leafs: 'You don't achieve anything without your teammates'
""It's a special day for me to be here," he said. "Back in October, the team came to me and said, MLSE would like to honour me and celebrate the 10-point game. I thought that's pretty cool and pretty special. Never realized it would come to the magnitude it is here today, but it means a lot to me.""
""The price of the ticket, believe it or not, was 10 bucks," he said. "It's an honour for me to bring Wendy into the equation today. She's such an important part of my life.""
""The message I said to the players this morning was, you don't achieve anything without your teammates,""
Darryl Sittler set the NHL record with 10 points in a single game on February 7, 1976 against the Boston Bruins. Fifty years later the Toronto Maple Leafs will honor the anniversary with a special pre-game ceremony ahead of a matchup with the Buffalo Sabres. Former teammates from the 10-point game are being brought out, and Sittler retains the $10 ticket that his late wife Wendy Bibbings kept. The Maple Leafs held a private presentation awarding Sittler the J. P. Bickell Memorial Award. Sittler conveyed that achievements require teammates while encouraging current players as the team seeks to end a four-game losing streak and regain playoff position.
