Why the Raptors should chase Haywood Highsmith on the buyout market
"Am I really about to sit here and write an entire piece convincing you that the Raptors should 'chase' a guy who just got waived from one of the worst teams in the league? To pick him up from a team that just cut him to make room for Ochai Agbaji, the guy the Raptors shipped out to balance the budget? You're darn right I am."
"Highsmith, out of Wheeling University, went undrafted in 2018 and opted to sign a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. Over the next three years he bounced between the Delaware Blue Coats (the Sixers G-League team) and various teams overseas before eventually landing a ten-day contract with the Miami Heat. Then another one. And then another one. Eventually he landed a guaranteed contract, and played a combined 213 games across four seasons with the Heat (including 80 starts)"
Haywood Highsmith is healthy, cleared for 5-on-5, and expected to make his season debut on February 11 following meniscus surgery. He went undrafted in 2018, signed a two-way with Philadelphia, spent time in the G-League and overseas, then earned a guaranteed NBA contract and played 213 games across four seasons with Miami, including 80 starts. Highsmith tore his meniscus in August 2025, was included in a salary-dump trade to Brooklyn, and was subsequently waived. He offers shooting and versatile two-way play, toughness, and a fight-from-the-bottom mentality that would complement Toronto's poor shooting and existing roster fit.
