"The focus now is on Gaza and the West Bank, where universities have been bombed and there's not much opportunity for any education," said Tamer Ozsu, a University of Waterloo professor.
"Them having not even a chance to come here and try their hand in education and research, it's quite devastating," Ozsu said, expressing the loss felt by the university community.
The family of Sally and Dalia Ghazi Ibaid expressed hopes for their daughters to find peace and realize their dreams after being accepted into the Global Student Relief Initiative.
Nada El-Falou, a PhD student volunteering in the initiative, reflected on the profound loss, saying that processing the twins' deaths took time, emblematic of the impact on the community.
